About the Department

The Bachelors’ course in Biotechnology was introduced by VTU in the academic year 2002-03. R.V.C.E. started B.E. Biotechnology programme in the same year with adequate support from the R.S.S.T. The department came into existence from September 1, 2003. The department was accredited by NBA for five years in the year 2008.

Mission
To impart quality education in Biotechnology, consistent with the State, National and International trends, needs and priorities. Also the mission is to promote education and conduct creative and rigorous studies in biotechnology to answer questions for the benefit of society and environment.

Vision

  • To emerge as a leader in providing excellent education in biotechnology.
  • To meet the human resource need of industry both nationally and internationally in Biotechnology and allied fields.
  • To inculcate the five ethos- culture of excellence, culture of innovation, culture of quality, culture of flexibility and culture of sustainability.
  • To establish strategic alliances with different centers of excellence nationally and internationally; to provide continued access to students to recent developments in the field.
  • To promote a sustained drive to upgrade knowledge of faculty by providing opportunities for undertaking research and training at leading research centers in India and abroad so as to enable them in rapid adoption of technology, research, teaching, and training methods.
  • To introduce postgraduate programme in biotechnology adapted to synchronize with emerging trends and to encourage students to undertake quality research programmes addressing topics of current global interest.

The department has well qualified and experienced staff specialized in various disciplines of Biotechnology. Twelve of them possess Ph. D degree and eight possess masters from reputed institutions and universities. The staff to student ratio is 1:13.

The department is recognized as research centre from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka. The department has MoU with Agricultural University, GKVK, Bangalore and Women’s University, Bijapur. Various funded projects from Government and industries are sanctioned to faculty members to carryout research. The courses offered are conglomeration of engineering sciences, core sciences, basic sciences, humanities and subjects related to immunetechnology, upstream downstream processing, plant tissue culture, biopharmaceuticals, agricultural biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, pharmaceutical biotechnology, forensic sciences etc. along with fully modified well equipped laboratories which are in parallel and competent with present industrial need and demand.

Laboratory

Biochemistry / Microbiology Lab/Upstream Processing Lab (Area=112+50.43 sq.m).
The major equipments are colorimeter, serological water bath, Hot air oven, Visiscan spectrophotometer, pH meter, Concentric Water Bath Fuming cupboard, Hot air oven, Bacteriological Incubator, Autoclave, Voltage Stabilizer, Colony counter, Orbital Shaking Incubator, Monocular Microscope, Binocular Microscope, Electronic Balance, Refrigerator, Laminar Air Flow, Microwave Oven.

Cell & Molecular Biology Lab / Enzyme Technology / Biokinetics lab ( Area = 112 sq.m).
The major equipments are Gas Liquid Mass Transfer Co-efficient, Analysis of Batch Reactor, Mixed Flow Reactor Analysis, RTD in Mixed Flow Reactor, RTD in Plug Flow Reactor, Temperature Effect on Denaturation of Enzymes, Magnetic Stirrer with hot plate, Vaccum pump, Thin Layer Chromatography Kit, Electronic balance, Remi R – 8c Centrifuge, pH Meter, Concentric Water Bath, Magnetic Stirrer, Double Distillation Unit, Table Top Centrifuge, Serological Water Bath, Cooling centrifuge, Filtration Assembly.

Genetic Engineering & Molecular Biology Laboratory (Area = 57.33 sq.m).
The major equipments are Vertical & Horizontal Electrophoresis unit with power pack, U V Transilluminator, Hybridization chamber, White light transilluminator, Vertical deep freezer -20 deg C, Gel Documentation system, Thermal cycler, Cyclomixer, Air conditioner.

Bioprocess Control and Instrumentation / Down Stream Processing (Area = 112 sq.m).
The major equipments are Industrial Process pH Control System, Measurements of Temperature, light and Humidity in Growth Chambers, Non- Interacting Liquid Level System, Interacting Liquid Level System, Control of Temperature in Bioprocess, Control of Pressure in Bioprocess, Control of Flow in Bioprocess, Dynamics of First Order System, Characteristics of Transducers (Flow Measurement), Measurement of Dissolved Oxygen, Peristaltic Pump, Colorimeter, Simple & Vaccum distillation unit, Demineralizer, Reverse Osmosis Unit, Baby Fermentor, Dead end Filtration System, Tangential filtration System.

Biotechnology Laboratory

 

Plant tissue culture research laboratory (Area = 50.43 sq.m).
The major equipments are PCR, lamina air flow, transilluminator, plant growth chamber, humidity chamber, incubator, hot air oven, microcentrifuge, stereomicroscope.

Animal culture research laboratory (Area = 50.43 sq.m).
The major equipments are Inverted microscope, binocular microscope , vertical lamina air flow, Incubator, hot air oven, CO2 incubator, hybridization chamber, fluorescent microscope

Bioinformatics Laboratory (Area = 134 sq.m).
The major equipments are 1 Server, 46 Pentium Systems (1 AMD System, 22 IBM System) all connected to Internet, GCG Wisconsin Package Software And 10 Bioinformatics Software.

Biotechnology Laboratory

Environmental Laboratory (Area = 285 sq.m).
The major equipments are HPLC, GC, AAS, BOD Incubator, COD Incubator, Flame Photometer, Milli-Q Water purification system, microwave digester system, walk in cooler, Nephalometer, Turbidometer.

Research Lab HETP (Area = 95 sq.m).
The major equipments are Sartorius 5 L Bioreactor, Autoclave, Refrigerator, Hot air oven, Laminar air flow, pH meter. Incubator, CO2 Incubator.

Achievements

Highlights of faculty’s achievement:

The faculty members have published more than 30 research papers in national and international journals and have presented about sixty papers in National/ International Conferences and acquired six national and international patents in last three years. Six books have been published by leading national publishers and one of them being an international edition.

Many faculty members are Life member of Indian Society for Technical Education (LMISTE), International Society of Biotechnology, National Science Congress (NSC), Society of Biological Chemist’s of India (SBC) and Association of Microbiologist’s of India (AMI).

  • There are eighteen faculty members twelve of them possess Ph.D degree and four of them are pursuing Ph.D.

Highlights of student’s achievement:

The students of 2007 batch have secured Gold medal and seven University ranks and of 2008 batch Gold medal and three University ranks.

  • About 40% of the students appear and qualify for the competitive exams like GATE/GRE/CAT/GMAT etc.
  • BIOSKEN students forum organizes various technical and cultural events under the banner HELIX which attracts students participation in large number
  • Weekly Wall magazine brings out latest innovative News in the field of Biotechnology
  • Annual Research Newsletter brings up research articles from the faculty and students
  • About 70% of the students carry out the industry collaborative and sponsored project work every year.
  • Students project sponsored by KSCST
  • Final year project awarded 2nd prize at RVCE
  • Presented papers at national and international conferences. Received best paper award at international conference at PESIT and RVCE and at National conference Dhanbad.
  • Won various prizes for Basket Ball at University and college level.
  • Participated in international debate competition at Oxford and Cambridge as well as at national level
  • Participated and won prizes at VTU cultural fest, various colleges and IIT Madras

Research Initiatives

The principal areas of research are Renewable energy, Hydrogen economy, Membrane based separation techniques, Conversion of coal and wastes to liquid fuels, Plant tissue culture, Molecular biology, Genetic engineering and nano-particles based purification of proteins.

The following projects have been completed successfully:

  • Hydrogen Economy Technology Program (HETP), 3 years sponsored by DST, TIFAC
  • Bio resource utilization for the removal of arsenic from drinking water sponsored by KSCST.
  • Application of ceramic membrane for separation and purification process techniques
  • Starch from maize (Ridhi Sidhi Gluco Biols (L), consultancy project)

The following projects are ongoing:

  • Biological production of clean fuel from coal funded by CMPDI, Ranchi, 3 years
  • Biological control of red rot disease on sugarcane funded by DBT, New Delhi, 3 years.
  • Use of Nano material in separation and purification of biologically important compounds

Industry Interface

The following collaborative project between Industry and Department of Biotechnology, R.V.C.E. has been completed:

  • Ridhi Sidhi Gluco Biols (L), Starch from Maize
  • Fabrication of Nanomaterial for protein purification applications, BHEL
  • In silico drug design, Institute of Computational Biology
  • Staff and students have been undergoing training and taking up collaborative projects at the leading industries and institutions related to the fields such as Waters India Ltd, BIOCON India Ltd, NIMHANS, KIDWAI Cancer Institute, K.C. Das, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, IISc., Indian Veterinary Research Institute.

Co-Curricular Activities and Extra-curricular activities

The Student’s forum “BIOSKEN” conducts various techno cultural activities every year. The various events taking place are:

Placements

The companies that recruit students from campus are KPTCL, CERNER, CTS, WIPRO, ACCENTURE, INFOSYS, TCS, ORACLE, PHILIPS, KPMG. The average salary drawn by a student is Rs. 3.2 lakhs.

For 2004-2008 batch, total of eighty companies visited the campus for the recruitment. Out of a total of thirty one eligible students, 36 offers were made and all got placed.

For 2005-2009 batch, total of one hundred twenty one companies visited the campus for the recruitment. Out of a total of thirty three eligible students, twenty eight offers were made and twenty two students got placed. Recruitment process is still in progress.
