About the Department

RVCE established the Biotechnology department in 2002-2003, affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) with adequate support from the R.S.S.T. The Department is accredited for 5 years by National Board of Accreditation (2008-13), infrastructure facilities of the department are spread over 2044 Sq Meters with well equipped laboratories, lecture halls and departmental library. It also has an air conditioned seminar hall accommodating 120 persons with multi media facilities. The department library is well stocked with reference books, text books and journals.

To promote creative education, research and innovation in biotechnology for the development of sustainable and inclusive technology for the benefit of society and environment.

• Department has started a new course M.Tech in Biotechnology from academic year 2011-12 under VTU. The total intake of students is 18.

The department has well qualified and experienced staff specialized in various disciplines of Biotechnology. There are a total of 20 faculties. Twelve of them possess Ph. D degree and eight possess masters from reputed institutions and universities. 7 of them are pursuing PhD from different Universities. The staff to student ratio is 1:13. The department is rated as top FOUR Biotechnology Schools in India and as FIRST in infrastructure by the survey made by leading Biotechnology magazine "BioSpectrum", 2010.

The department is recognized as research centre from Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka, Mangalore University, Kuvempu University and Tumkur University. The department has MoU with Agricultural University, GKVK, Bangalore and Women's University, Bijapur. The department has collaborative project with BHEL, Catalyz, Institute of Computational Biology, Bangalore, e-Parisara. Various funded projects from Government and industries are sanctioned to faculty members to carryout research.
The academic courses offered for students of undergaduation are are conglomeration of engineering sciences, core sciences, basic sciences, humanities and subjects related to immunotechnology, upstream downstream processing, plant tissue culture, biopharmaceuticals, agricultural biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, pharmaceutical biotechnology, forensic sciences etc. along with fully modified well equipped laboratories which are in parallel and competent with present industrial need and demand.

• About 40% of the students appear and qualify for the competitive exams like GATE/GRE/CAT/GMAT etc.

The Student's forum "BIOSKEN" conducts various techno cultural activities every year. The various events taking place are:

• In Helix 2011,Walkathon was organized on October 2011 ufrom Corporation to Cubbon Park with the theme "Environmental Protection" and in this event students and teachers participated.Eco club has been inagurated on 21-10-2011 having the theme "Planting the saplings, Maintainance of clean environment and Environmental awareness for society".
• In Helix-2009 an event "GO GREEN" campaign was organized that involved various activities like field interactive session with public (outside campus), screening documentaries, an artificial tree "Kalpavriksha", a flex board to write message on extensive ecological damage, staging street plays, cleanliness drive throughout the campus for segregated waste disposal, planting the sapling to form "Sanjeevani Van" having ecofriendly and medicinal plants, tree hugging event signifying their importance on campus.

The companies that recruit students from campus are KPTCL, CERNER, CTS, WIPRO, ACCENTURE, INFOSYS, TCS, ORACLE, PHILIPS, KPMG. The average salary drawn by a student is Rs. 3.5 lakhs.
