Department of Chemistry
About the Department
Department of chemistry has started in the year 1963
Chemistry department is a supporting department
Courses Taught
- Engineering Chemistry (Theory and Practicals) for all branches of Engineering
- Technical Chemistry (Theory and Practicals) for chemical Engineering
Mission
To feed the budding engineer with finer aspects of science which make him to understand, exploit and innovate, thus contributing to the technological advancement of tomorrow
Vision
- To encourage the inquisitiveness in a student and make him to understand the fundamentals of technology
- To inform the student of the latest development in science so that he can exploit it for development of technology.
- To imbibe in the student the idea that understanding of an atom is very essential to understand the universe.
- To instigate the “researcher” in a student so that he could be an innovator or inventor of tomorrow.
Department Long Term Goals
- To build up the department potentially to embark upon research, in addition to teaching and motivating the faculty to undertake research Work.
- To develop the department as a model one; to bring in a deeper conceptual understanding of science processes by the students. Thus enable them to apply these to the engineering and technology in a true innovative way.
- To enthuse the faculty to undertake research work, publications which could lead to Doctoral degree
- To computerize the departments providing systems to the individual teachers; net working and provide Internet facility to access knowledge base wherever it is available (other libraries and websites).
- To train the faculty and technical staff to utilize and develop effective teaching-learning modules and to adopt the modern trends in Education Technology concepts and media.
- To update the department libraries to digital / E-library with relevant collections of CD’s for use by students and teachers.
- Encourage teachers to actively take part in national and international level workshops, seminars and conferences.
- To modernize the laboratories in tune with the needs. Supporting the students in their projects.
- To provide co guidance along with engineering faculty to the final year
Department Short Term Goals
- The academic input necessary for achieving best results
- Training the students in theory and lab for a complete understanding of the subject
About the Department
Department of chemistry is teaching Engineering chemistry (theory & practical) for classes of I & II semester Engineering (all branches) and Technical Chemistry (theory & practicals) for III rd and IV semester Chemical engineering students and guiding the projects to chemical engineering students
Department produces very high percentage of results every year and maintaining the figure at almost 100
There are fives staff members out of 8 sanctioned in the department of chemistry, Two of them posses PhD degree and one M. Phil. Senior staff members in the department with their vast experience were able to guide the students well. Some of the members have presented research papers in India and abroad, which are considered to be prestigious with respect to SCIENCE faculty. Research papers are also published in National and International Journals. Text books were published. Staff members are encouraged in their research activities and permitted to participate various National and International conferences in India and abroad. A center for advanced polymer materials has been set up in the department of chemistry under the Directorship of Dr.K.Natarajan. The laboratory has patented one of its technology. One more patent has been filed in connection with a new catalyst. The laboratory has made out an invention on polymer sealing product which has brought world wide recognition by winning NRDC award during 2004. The department has conducted two National level conferences on Futuristic materials during Nov-2005 and Sep-2008. The feedback reports received from participants confirmed the success of the conference
