About the Department

Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CS) was established in 1984. The CS Department is accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi for 3 years and Affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, Karnataka . Top ranking students from CET opt for Computer Science. The CS Department has highly qualified faculty and has excellent state of the art hardware and software resources. Hundred percent eligible students are placed in high profile companies with good packages. Students of the department have been securing top ranks in VTU examinations. Students are offered scholarship by various companies like Infineon, Packet Motion, TCS, and Cognizant. The Department provides in-house Edusat facility for viewing distance learning programmes beamed by the VTU.

There are thirty four faculties in the department. In which there are three Ph.D holders, nine faculties have registered for Ph.D and four faculties are sponsored for M.Tech course.

The department has a Staff ratio 0f 1: 12, for both UG and PG programs.

Students of B.E. program study core subjects like: Digital Electronics, Analysis Design of Algorithm, Microprocessor, O.S, Programming languages, Computer networks, DBMS, System software, Cryptography and network security, Mobile communications, Ad-Hoc Networks, Performance Evaluation etc.

Events & Seminars

The Department of CSE has organized many conference and workshops. These events were very successful and have got lot of appreciation for the same. Following is the list of conference and workshop conducted by the department :

  • National Conference on “Wireless Network Security – Issues & Challenges” and “1st CSI Regional Students Convention”.

  • State level Conference “20th CSI Karnataka Student Convention”.

  • Short Term Workshop on “Software Testing”

  • Dr.N.K.Srinath received “Best Faculty Award” by Cognizent Technologies.
  • The faculties of the department have published papers in thirteen International journals, thirty seven in international conferences, twenty one in national journals and twenty one in national conferences.
  • Dr. Shobha G. received “Best Teacher Award” from AICTE
  • Dr. Viswanatha has co-authored “Programming Languages “ book by Ravi Sethi , for Indian Universities.

Students:

  • Students were awarded as “Cognizant Best Outgoing Student “, Secured Second Place in” Programming and Debugging Event”,Secured First Place in “Launch Pad Event”. Awarded Innovative project of the department for their project ,“Morphological Analyzer “ for Kannada Language by CSI. Students have secured many prizes in technical quiz conducted by KSIT,DBIT BMSCE ,CSI ,GAT and MVJ . Won First prize in Programming in C / C++ by DBIT, Secured Second place in the event Debugging In C / C++ held at Dr. AIT.Won Second Place in the event Algorithm Design, won First prize for the project work entitled “Software to Convert English Text to Sign Language for Deaf”. Selected as Microsoft Student Partner. Presented paper in many National and international conferences and journals. Won National Young IT Professionals award for Southern Region Of CSI.
  • Students have got twenty nine ranks under Bangalore University and thirty two ranks under VTU under UG category. In PG category students have secured three ranks.
  • They have also got many scholarships by Infineon and PacketMotion India Development Centre Pvt Ltd

1. Infosys “Campus Connect” programme was initiated by the faculties in the department.
2. Conducted Collaborative program in “Diploma in Information Technology” for students from KONYANG University, South Korea.
3. During last three years as a part of industry institution interaction, HP has initiated HP chair. Prof B.I. Khodanpur has been designated as HP chair for all M.Tech and B.E projects carried out in HP. Every year almost ten projects are given in Open Source by HP to our B.E and M.Tech students. The students are paid stipend during the project work.

Co-Curricular Activities and Extra-curricular activities

Faculties of the Department have the membership of ISTE, CSI, IEEE . Edusat programs are conducted by one of the faculty regularly. Department also has a club called “Vrithanth”. Following are the events conducted by it.

  • Vrithanth (IT Association of CSE Dept.) organized a talk on “Powering PlayStation 3 - The Next Generation IBM Cell Processor”
  • Vrithanth organized IT-related quiz.
  • INTEL as part of their Blue Buddies program gave a seminar on Quad Core Programming
  • Vrithanth conducted a C programming contest for 3rd sem B.E., students and M.Tech students.

Alumni Contribution

1. A Semester-long Training Programme for the students of our college in the areas like Programming Skills, Communication Skills, etc., conducted by Alumni of our institution working in Yahoo Groups.
2. 3-days programme for faculty of various VTU affiliated engineering colleges on C# and .net Technologies conducted by Alumni of our institution working in National Instruments (NI).

Placements

Students in this department have been recruited by very good companies with a very good package. Many students have more than two offers. The statistics of the placement shown below indicates the details of placement from the year 2006 to 2009. IBM and CTS were the companies recruiting maximum number of students. Companies like DESHAN and AMAZON have offered packages of more than 9 lakhs per annum.
