About the Department
The Electronics & Communication Engineering department was established in the year 1969. The course is accredited by NBA. The department is the most sought after branch of engineering by top CET rank holders. The department is running Under Graduate program with an in take of 120 students and 2 Post Graduate programmes; in VLSI Design & Embedded Systems, and in Communication Systems. The Department is recognized research center for VTU. All eligible students are placed in reputed companies every year.

The department has a total faculty strength of 39 out of which five are PhD holders and sixteen are pursuing PhD, among them two faculty members have already submitted their thesis. All the faculty members are Post graduates with good teaching experience. The department has a student staff ratio of 13:1. The department has excellent infrastructure with state of the art equipment and software. The department is having computer centre with 150 computers cater to student needs. The department has a strong R & D culture.
B.E in Electronics & Communication Engineering course content covers: Humanities and social sciences (6%), Basic sciences (14%), Engineering Sciences (13%), Professional subjects (core) (45%), Professional subjects (Electives) (11.5%), Other electives (2%) & Project work (8.5%). Few electives are industry collaborative electives and taught by industry experts

Events & Seminars
The Department has organized many conferences and workshops to enhance the knowledge in advanced fields. These events were very successful and have got lot of appreciation for the same. Following is the list of conference and workshop conducted by the department for the past four years
- A two days National Conference on “System on a Chip for Broad band Applications-2005” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. About 8 technical lectures from various technical luminaries were delivered on SoC for Broad band Applications. Around 70 faculty members from reputed engineering colleges participated in the conference. The program was successfully completed.
- National symposium on “Research methodologies and techniques in Control, Communication and Signal processing (RMTCCS) - 2008” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. Both teaching and non-teaching staff were actively involved in the conference, 6 technical lectures from various technical experts was delivered. Around 50 faculty members from reputed engineering colleges attended the symposium.
- A three days International Conference on “Computer, Communication, Controls & Instrumentation 2006” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. About 100 high quality technical papers were presented in the conference. Both teaching and non-teaching staff were actively involved in the conference, 6 technical lectures from various technical luminaries was delivered on latest cutting edge technologies. Around 70 faculty members from reputed engineering colleges attended the conference and also presented papers. The program was successfully completed.
- A three days IEEE co-sponsored International Conference on “Computer, Communication, Controls & Instrumentation 3C-I 2007” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering in association with Department of Instrumentation Technology. More than 100 high quality technical papers were presented in the conference. About 6 expert talks from different technical luminaries were delivered on Computer, Communication, and Controls & Instrumentation. More than 80 faculty members from various engineering colleges of the country attended the conference and presented papers in the conference. The program was successfully completed.
- A fifteen days Staff Development Programmme on “Low Power Digital VLSI Design & Its Implementation” sponsored by AICTE, New Delhi is organized by ECE department to enhance the knowledge in VLSI area.
The topics covered in the course includes: Low power VLSI and Mixed signal design, Testing challenges in VLSI, VLSI architecture for DSP, Image processing applications. Hands on experience on software packages such as Cadence, Mathwork and System generator.

Staff Development Programmme on “Low Power Digital VLSI Design & Its Implementation” NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ‘VLSI & MULTIMEDIA’ – NCVM’09 
A two days National Conference on “ VLSI and Multimedia Communication –NCVM09”was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, comprising of totally four expert lectures & four sessions of paper presentation.
The response for the call for papers has been truly overwhelming. The jury had tough time to shortlist the papers to be presented in the conference.
The conference covering two cutting edge technologies & being sponsored by IETE and a cluster of other few companies was definitely an important event on the academic front.

- DSP based engine control
Aims at controlling Fuel mixture and Ignition events along with other auxiliary functions such as controlling cooling fans, pumps and compressors onboard a vehicle.- Dual Mic Noise concellation
In this project, different adaptive filter structures are explored to achieve noise cancellation using dual microphones.

- Development of carbon Nano tube based vaccum Nano electronic X-ray sources for making compact low power hand held X-ray funded by VTU
- Design of predictive controller for ship Navigation funded by NRB
- Performance simulation using discrete multi-tone algorithms for acoustic wireless underwater communication and for wired communication in underwater vehicles funded by NRB

- Design, development and integration of coprocessors with DSP TI family using FPGA for naval applications funded by NRB
- Developments of algorithms for improved accuracy in DGPS measurements using DSP tools funded by ARMREB
- A Study of defining maneuring parameters of ship model by analyzing wakes using image processing techniques funded by NRB
- A study and analysis of active array antennas embedded in hemispherical and hemispheroidal shaped dielectric lenses for airborne mobile communication funded by CABS
- Design and development of compact universal controller for actuation system of autonomous vehicle funded by NRB
- Design and development of dielectric lenses based active smart array antenna for surface communication of underwater vehicles funded by NRB
- Design and development of controller working on 1553 digital bus on various modes of military applications funded by IPR DRDO
- ASIC control for AC servomotor drive for military applications funded by ARB DRDO
- A cost effective smart antenna for mobile broadband application funded by ISRO
- Implementation of self turning controller funded by CPRI
Industry/Institution Interface
- ECE department has signed MOU with L&T for M.Tech VLSI and Embedded Systems students.
- ISRO, BEL has sponsored equipments for virtual class room & Texas Instruments sponsored DSP development kits.
- ALTERA, XILINX, SYNOPSIS, LATTICE, CISCO donated hardware and software for VHDL and VLSI lab.
- FREESCALE a semiconductor company has set up RVCE Freescale Embedded Systems Laboratory.
- Few Faculty are doing projects in collaboration with industry sponsored by the public sectors like ISRO, LRDE & NRB
- Faculties are involved in training programmes & workshops conducted for BEL, LRDE & DRDO Employees
- Every year more than 70% of the UG & PG students are doing Internship/project work in reputed companies namely Motorola, Intel, Philips, L&T, TI, ARM, Wipro, BEL, ISRO etc.
Co-Curricular Activities and Extra-curricular activities
The various co-curricular activities in the department are:
- Most of the faculties & all the students are members of professional bodies like ISTE,IETE and IEEE.
- I.S.F- IETE student forum , IEEE Student forum and student clubs are regularly organizing special talks & workshops for students by experts on cutting edge areas like PSOC, Nanotechnology, MIMO, Analog VLSI etc
- Department releases newsletter "EC BUZZ" biannually.
- A techno cultural fest "IMPULSE" is organized on a regular basis by the
students. Avalanche (Souvenir) is released during conferences and students
