About the Department
The Electronics department was established in the year 1969. The NBA, New Delhi has accredited Electronics & Communication Engineering department for a further period of three years. The Electronics & Communication Engineering department is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum. The department is the most sought after branch of engineering by top CET rank holders. Every year students of E&C dept. get minimum of two to five ranks in the under graduate and also in M.Tech examinations conducted by VTU, Belgaum. All eligible students are Placed in reputed companies every year.

The department has a total faculty strength of 41 out of which two are PhD holders and ten are pursuing PhD, among them one faculty has already submitted thesis & waiting for viva. The department has a student staff ratio of 12:1. Most of the faculty members are PG degree holders with good teaching experience. The department has excellent infrastructure with state of the art equipment and software. The department is having computer centre with 150 computers cater to student needs. The department has a strong R & D culture.
B.E in Electronics & Communication Engineering course content covers: Humanities and social sciences (6%), Basic sciences (14%), Engineering subjects (11%), Professional subjects (core) (47%), Professional subjects (Electives) (11.5%), Other electives (2%) & Project work (8.5%).

Events & Seminars
The Department has organized many conferences and workshops to enhance the knowledge in advanced fields. These events were very successful and have got lot of appreciation for the same. Following is the list of conference and workshop conducted by the department for the past four years
- A two days National Conference on “System on a Chip for Broad band Applications-2005” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. About 8 technical lectures from various technical luminaries were delivered on SoC for Broad band Applications. Around 70 faculty members from reputed engineering colleges participated in the conference. The program was successfully completed.
- National symposium on “Research methodologies and techniques in Control, Communication and Signal processing (RMTCCS) - 2008” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. Both teaching and non-teaching staff were actively involved in the conference, 6 technical lectures from various technical experts was delivered. Around 50 faculty members from reputed engineering colleges attended the symposium.
- A three days International Conference on “Computer, Communication, Controls & Instrumentation 2006” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering. About 100 high quality technical papers were presented in the conference. Both teaching and non-teaching staff were actively involved in the conference, 6 technical lectures from various technical luminaries was delivered on latest cutting edge technologies. Around 70 faculty members from reputed engineering colleges attended the conference and also presented papers. The program was successfully completed.
- A three days IEEE co-sponsored International Conference on “Computer, Communication, Controls & Instrumentation 3C-I 2007” was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering in association with Department of Instrumentation Technology. More than 100 high quality technical papers were presented in the conference. About 6 expert talks from different technical luminaries were delivered on Computer, Communication, and Controls & Instrumentation. More than 80 faculty members from various engineering colleges of the country attended the conference and presented papers in the conference. The program was successfully completed.
- A fifteen days Staff Development Programmme on “Low Power Digital VLSI Design & Its Implementation” sponsored by AICTE, New Delhi is organized by ECE department to enhance the knowledge in VLSI area.
The topics covered in the course includes: Low power VLSI and Mixed signal design, Testing challenges in VLSI, VLSI architecture for DSP, Image processing applications. Hands on experience on software packages such as Cadence, Mathwork and System generator.

Staff Development Programmme on “Low Power Digital VLSI Design & Its Implementation” NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ‘VLSI & MULTIMEDIA’ – NCVM’09 
A two days National Conference on “ VLSI and Multimedia Communication –NCVM09”was organized by the department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, comprising of totally four expert lectures & four sessions of paper presentation.
The response for the call for papers has been truly overwhelming. The jury had tough time to shortlist the papers to be presented in the conference.
The conference covering two cutting edge technologies & being sponsored by IETE and a cluster of other few companies was definitely an important event on the academic front.
Achievements
Faculty:
- Dr. S. Ravishankar has three patents
- Faculty members have published four books
- Faculty members have published thirty one papers in international journals, two papers in international workshops, twenty one papers in international conferences, seven papers in international symposiums and thirty four papers in national seminar/conference/symposium
- Faculties are involved in giving expert lectures for technical subjects (Microprocessor, VHDL, Electronic Circuits & Computer Organization) under EDUSAT program conducted by VTU, Belgaum
- Faculties have given training to students of Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, Arunachal Pradesh in the area of Digital Circuits.
- Entrepreneurship training program for students by various industry experts was organized by the department.
- Freescale Embedded processor workshop was conducted by the dept for students & staff
Students:
- Students have been securing good GATE and CAT Scores. Every year our alumni join IITs & IIMs other than foreign universities for higher studies.
- Students have innovatively designed “ANTITHEFT DEVICE” for car which was acclaimed by industry and media
- Students have secured second place in Asian level Debate at Malaysia
- Students have participated, presented papers and won prizes in intercollegiate competitions at IITs and NITs.
- Some of the final Year projects adjudged as best projects are:
1. “Design and implementation of Communication sub system for a Cube Satellite”, which is related to
STUDSAT PICO-SATELLITE project to be launched by ISRO, Bangalore.
2. “Improvised Electronic Voting Machine for BLIND” & Speech Controlled System for Physically Challenged”
- Students have won many prizes in sports and cultural events at the state and regional level.
- Two batches of final year students have won the prizes in IEEE student paper presentation
- Pre-final students have won third Place in PSoC Innovator Design Challenge, India conducted by Cypress Semiconductors at Anna University, Chennai.
- Every year Infineon scholarship will be given to Meritorious students of II & III year by Infineon company
- With alumni support meritorious students are getting scholarship
- Every year III semester E&C topper gets KRV memorial prize.
- Prizes are given to final year toppers from staff contributions
Chitra:
- May 2008- the All Asian Parliamentary Debate Tournament held in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Out of almost 100 teams from all parts of the continent we reached the octofinals (top 16).
- October 2008- the team won the intra-university debate selections held in SBMJ college of Engg, Bangalore and were chosen to represent VTU.
- December 2008- the National Youth festival at the zonal level. The team placed in South Zone debate held at University of Calicut, Calicut and were sent to represent South zone at the national level
- January 2009- the National Youth festival organised by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of India. Finals were held in West Bengal. the team placed 2nd on the National level.

Research Initiatives
Research activities have been carried out in the areas of (i). Image Processing, (ii). Broadband Communication, (iii). RADAR, (vi). Antennas (v). Control & Automation & (vi). Testing in VLSI. The ongoing R & D projects carried out by the faculties of the department are listed below, Few projects are completed & few are in progress:
- Implementation of Self Tuning Controller
- Development of Data Conversion Unit for a 1553 controller
- ASIC Control for AC Servomotor Drive for Military applications
- Design and development of controller working on 1553b digital bus in various modes.
- A cost effective Smart Antenna for Mobile Broadband Applications.
- Design and Development of Dielectric Lens based on active smart array antenna for surface communication of
Underwater vehicles.
- Design & Hardware implementation of Universal Controller for Radar Control in Marine applications
- A study and analysis of active array antennas embedded in hemispherical and hemispheroidal shaped
dielectric lenses for airborne mobile communications
- Design and development and integration of coprocessor with DSP using FPGA for Naval application
- Development of algorithms for improved accuracy in DGPS measurement using DSP tools
Industry/Institution Interface
- ECE department has signed MOU with L&T for M.Tech VLSI and Embedded Systems students.
- ISRO, BEL has sponsored equipments for virtual class room & Texas Instruments sponsored DSP development kits.
- ALTERA, XILINX, SYNOPSIS, LATTICE, CISCO donated hardware and software for VHDL and VLSI lab.
- FREESCALE a semiconductor company has set up RVCE Freescale Embedded Systems Laboratory.
- Few Faculty are doing projects in collaboration with industry sponsored by the public sectors like ISRO, LRDE & NRB
- Faculties are involved in training programmes & workshops conducted for BEL, LRDE & DRDO Employees
- Every year more than 70% of the UG & PG students are doing Internship/project work in reputed companies namely Motorola, Intel, Philips, L&T, TI, ARM, Wipro, BEL, ISRO etc.
Co-Curricular Activities and Extra-curricular activities
The various co-curricular activities in the department are:
- Most of the faculties & all the students are members of professional bodies like ISTE,IETE and IEEE.
- I.S.F- IETE student forum & IEEE Student forum student clubs are regularly organizing special talks & workshops for students by experts on cutting edge areas like PSOC, Nanotechnology, MIMO etc
- PARAMANU & TRONICTECH student clubs organizes many inter-collegiate fests and activities every year that receive participation from other colleges in the city.
Placements
E & C students receive immense patronage from the industry. Students often graduate with more than one offer and are given an additional 'dream option' to choose the company of their choice. Many students have been placed in reputed companies like INTEL, MOTOROLA, TEXAS INSTRUMENTS, HP, IBM, WIPRO, INFOSYS, TATA ELXI, SASKEN etc. All the eligible students gets placement every year.
