Department of Industrial Engineering and Management

About the Department

From the Desk of Prof. Dr. N. S. Narahari, HoD (Industrial Engineering and Management)

The Department of Industrial and Production Engineering (IPE) was established in the year 1985 and was affiliated to Bangalore University. The department was offering a four-year under graduate degree programme in BE (IPE) with focus on industrial engineering and production engineering. Considering the opinion of the recruiting agencies, elite academicians and consequent to the opening up of Indian economy, the department started offering the BE in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) during 1992 and hence renamed as Department of Industrial Engineering and Management. The curriculum focus switched over from traditional business practices to contemporary Engineering & Managerial interventions. This course develops the knowledge and skills in the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Functional areas of management, Information Systems, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management, Quality Management and Quantitative Models for decision making, apart from basic engineering knowledge and skills with emphasis on overall personality development. The branch develops in the students, systems thinking abilities to handle complex problem solving situations. This branch of engineering produces generalist engineers who can serve in Manufacturing, Service and Research organizations. With the formation of Visvesvaraya Technological University in 1998, the Department continued to offer BE (IEM) degree. The department is accorded Autonomous status by VTU, Belgaum and UGC, New Delhi in the year 2007. This has enabled the faculty members to actively involve in the curriculum design and implementation with the inputs from the various stake holders such as Industrial experts, alumni, eminent academicians and parents. With a focus on developing technical and managerial competence amongst students for employment, the department is offering M.Tech in Engineering Management and the programme is started during academic year 2011 - 12.

The department has qualified and experienced teaching faculty with specialization in Industrial Engineering, Industrial Management, Reliability Engineering, Manufacturing Management and Production Engineering with highly skilled and self motivated technical staff. The state of the art Physical infrastructure has been established in order to promote a congenial academic environment to impart quality education. Few of the equipment include Integrated Composite Anthropometer, G.E. Margneten Stress Test Software, Straight Line Conveyor system, Tread Mill, Full Automatic Blood Pressure Monitor, Cellular Layout Experimental Setup, CNC, Vertical Milling Machine, LVDT Sensor with Vernier Height Gauge, Pertho-Meter, Milling Machine, Licensed and Open Source Software's for various applications. The faculty members are actively involved in consultancy assignments, and executing funded projects, Research and also conduct training programmes for students, faculty of other institutions and industrial executives in the core area of competence.
The department houses research center recognized by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) and enables aspirants to actively engage in research pursuits in the contemporary areas of Industrial Engineering and Management such as Supply Chain Management, E-enterprise Modeling, Change Management, Applied Ergonomics, Energy Management Human Resource Management, Lean Manufacturing System and Manufacturing Technology. Several research and development projects in the niche areas have been successfully executed by the department with the support from various funding agencies such as DST, AICTE, DRDO and NRB. The department successfully executed more than 15 consultancy assignments.
