About the Department
The Department of Master of Computer Applications was started in the year 1997. This course is a three year Post-Graduate program in Computer Applications. MCA program is affiliated to VTU. The MCA Program at RVCE has been accredited by National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. The students of MCA are motivated to take up research activities. Being exposed to quantitative and qualitative analysis skills which are built into the curriculum and training provided by the department the students are equipped to be innovative and creative. The graduates of this discipline will also have adequate mathematical and software skills.

Achieve professional excellence through quality teaching and training in computer applications for an all-round development of individuals who can excel in their profession with a high degree of integrity and ethical standards, capable of responding to the changing needs of industry and the society.

Academic Program:
The MCA course consists of core subjects like Operating systems, Ethics, Databases, Digital Electronics, Mathematics, system software etc. The chart shown below represents the blending of subjects of different skill area in the curriculum. The Master of Computer Application curriculum spreads over 6 semesters which includes courses aimed at transmitting the broad spectrum of knowledge as follows:

The department has on its rolls highly qualified teaching and technical staffs, exposed to the latest developments in their fields, to impart technical and practical skills to the students. The Faculties and students have enrolled in various professional bodies like IEEE, CSI, ISTE, IETE etc. The ratio of faculty to student is 1:12.
Infrastructure / Facilities
The Department library is well stocked with books, magazines and journals. It has more than 900 book titles for the benefit of the students. The department also has a CD-Library with more than 50 CD-Titles.
The department is spread over a area of 2036.05 Sq. M.
- The whole department is Wi-Fi enabled.
- There are three well-equipped networked computer labs with 130 high end Computer Systems and peripherals.
- A Project lab has been set exclusively for 6th Semester projects.
- Internet Lab has been setup in the department, apart from the common browsing center facility available in the College, in order to enable the students to do quality projects.

A research lab has also been established with high-end computer systems and peripherals with internet facility for executing research projects funded by various agencies like, Naval Research Board, AICTE, Armament Research Board, etc.
- There are three well equipped classrooms with audio visual facility.
- One Hi-tech classroom with multimedia setup.
- One Air-conditioned seminar hall with multimedia facility.
The laboratories are well equipped with powerful servers, computer systems, peripherals, Networking facility, Powersupply etc. The details are as follows: -

Events & Seminars
The department has organized many conferences, workshops and seminars on the current trends in industry for the up gradation of the faculties and students. Some of them are
- Three months Entrepreneurship Development Program on “Hardware Maintenance” sponsored by TEDP, Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi in the year 2008.
- Two day National Conference on “Computational Mathematics in Engineering Applications”.
- Two day National conference on “Advanced multimedia processing & applications”.
- One day Public talk on “Free software / Free society” by Richard M Stallman was organized by MCA department at Mangala Mantapa, NMKRV.
- Two day workshop on “Web Application Development” using LAMP (Linux, Apache, Mysql, Php) was conducted by the department for faculty and students. Sri Krishnakanth Mane, India’s First Blind Computer Programmer, Senior scientist, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was the resource person.
- Two day workshop on “Rational Software Architecture” was organized by the department for faculties of all colleges under VTU, resource persons were from IBM.
- Two day workshop on “Phython” was conducted by the department, the resource person was Mr. Baiju of ZeOmegha Techologies.
- MCA department hosted a two day “Community Launch of Microsoft’s New Products, Windows Vista – Operating System, Microsoft Office System 2007, And Microsoft Exchange Server 2007” at NMKRV auditorium
- One day “Hands on Lab – Microsoft advanced products – Dot Net, ASP.Net” by Microsoft Student User Group was conducted.
- Seminar on “Concept of Open source and career Opportunities in Open source”, was conducted. This was delivered by Mr. Anand Bellan Raman, Manager, Global learning services(south India and srilanka) Red Hat India Pvt. Ltd.
- A Seminar on “Clementine” by the resource person of Strategies Intelligent Services was organized by the department in 2009
- A technical seminar on “Info Sphere” was organized by the department for the faculty members. The resource person of Keysoft Solution delivered the seminar.
- One day Seminar on “Management Information Systems” was organized for the students and wad delivered by Niranjan sarja – Cognizant technologies
- Two day workshop on “ERP” was conducted by Accenture two times for the students.
- Three day workshop was conducted by “IBM – IBM Tivoli– workshop on Data storage Management”, by Mr. Sharath, ZEN Soft Pune.
- Coordinated in the conduction of National Conference on “Intelligent Models for Data Processing and Management” jointly with Avinashilingam university
- Coordinated in the conduction of National Conference on “Information Systems and Computer Engineering”, NICE 2007, jointly conducted by RV College of Engineering, Bangalore and Avinashlingam University for Women, Coimbatore at RVCE, Bangalore.

Achievements
Achievements and awards (faculty):
There is one Ph.D holder and 7 faculties are pursuing their Ph.D programme in the department. To add to its credit, the department has more than 90 publications in various National/ International Journals and conferences. Some of the awards received by the faculties are -
- Young Teacher’s Career Award by AICTE.
- Bhartiya Shiksha Samman Puraskar for “Excellence in chosen field of activity” by Nations Econimic for Health and Educational Growth, New Delhi on the occasion of 10th National Seminar on “Individual Achievements and National Development”.
- Award for Doctorate in Education by Global Society for Health & Educational Growth, New Delhi on the occasion of 21st National Seminar on Individual Achievements and National Development.

Achievements (Students)
The Department has Achieved total of 8 University Ranks. Last year 2 ranks IV Rank and IX Rank was bagged by the department.
Some of the awards received by the students are
- TCS gold medal award, for the year 2007 – 2008.
- Best paper award for the paper titled “Statistical Profiler for NIDS” at Infotsav – 07, state level IT fest held on 13th , 14th 2007.
- Best Innovative Project under EDC cell, 2008, RVCE for the project titled “Testing framework for VESPA”, carried out at Yahoo! India, Bangalore.
- Best Paper Award for the paper titled “ Ajax for improving web experience” , at Blue Star Infotech Ltd, Koramangala, 2007.
- IBM great mind challenge contest, taken up by MCA students & staff, receiving award for Overall Excellence. RV College was rated among top 20 colleges in the contest among 650 participating colleges.

Research Initiatives
Research has been carried out in the department by faculties in various areas like Data Mining, Software Engineering, Network Security, Mobile Communication, etc.
Department has funded with the following research projects:
- Development of Algorithms for improved Accuracy in DGPS Measurements using Digital Signal Processing Tools funded by Armament Research Board
- Adaptive Texture Representation Using Neural Networks funded by AICTE
- Object Detection and Recognition funded by Armament
- Studies on Design and Characterization of Radio Frequency Micro Electrochemical system based Devices for Naval Applications funded by Naval Research Board
Industry Interface
The staff members regularly interact with industries to understand their requirements. The students will be trained based on the requirement which facilitates the students to work on the relevant projects. The department organizes seminars/workshops by experts from the companies, so that faculties and students are exposed to the latest advancements in the fields viz., Software Engineering, Object Oriented Analysis & Design, Database Management System, Management Information System, Networking. They also get hands-on experiences in latest platforms and applications.
Under IBM Academic Initiative many Workshops were conducted to the faculties and students of RVCE and other colleges under VTU.
Infosys campus connect programme was conducted for the students of non IT branches of RVCE, who were placed at Infosys.
Reputed companies like HCL, SAP, Accenture etc,. conducts series of seminars on Emerging Technologies in IT industries.

Co-Curricular Activities and Extra-curricular activities
The department has a technical forum “Shristi” for the students, aimed at enhancing the technical knowledge and over all personality of the students. Seminars, workshops, industrial visits, group discussions, annual conferences, technical fest etc. are organized. The students with faculty support manage this forum.
Under this forum the students attend different inter collegiate fests and have obtained many championship trophies – some of them are, “Overall Championship Trophy” for two continuous years at Gate ways, An All India Intercollegiate IT Fest Christ college. “Runners Up” at SHELLS 2008 Kristu Jayanthi College of Management and Technology and at INFOTSAV 2008 Inter collegiate IT fest at Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering, Mysore etc. They have won many other individual prizes also.
The department has a “Research Forum” to motivate the students towards research activities, under which students have initiated research projects under faculty guidance. The students have published research papers under this Forum and some of them have got “Best Paper Award”
Personality Development Course is organized on a regular basis, to improve their communication skills and are trained to face the placement activities successfully. Bridge courses are conducted for the students to meet the industry requirements
Placements
The students of MCA course have got job opportunities in software companies like Oracle, Intel, Accenture, TCS, IBM, Wipro, Infosys, Honeywell, Mindtree, Tesco, Amazon, etc.. The highest salary is about 8 lakhs and average around 3.87 lakhs.
MCA students are also exposed to excellent technical environment, with courses being conducted by companies like Oracle, IBM, Dell, TCS, Accenture etc.
