About the Course

The Department of Biotechnology has started M.Tech in Biotechnology from the academic year 2011-12. The course, offered by the Department of Biotechnology, is handled by faculty who are highly qualified and dedicated faculties. Intake to this course is 18 students, selected by VTU through a Post Graduate Common Entrance Test (PGCET) process.

The course is multidisciplinary and has the following core subjects: Concepts in Biology, Principles of Chemical Engineering, Biomolecules and Molecular Biology, Computer Programming and Biostatistics, Bioprocess control and Instrumentation, Plant and Animal Biotechnology, Microbial Biotechnology, Applied Bioinformatics, Advanced Downstream Processing. The electives offered are - Enzyme Technology, Data warehousing and Data mining, Genomics, Proteomics and Microarray, Environmental Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Molecular Modeling and Simulation, Tissue Engineering, Bioethics, biosafety and IPR, Management, Entrepreneurship and Biobusiness, Clinical Biotechnology, Metabolic Engineering and Nanobiotechnology. The students do project work for a year either in the department or in industries/companies (starting from the end of 2nd sem and ends at the end of 4th sem).

 

Infrastructure

1) Establishment of New PG lab (funded by RSST)

2) Fermentation Research Lab funded by CMPDI, Coal Ministry, Ranchi

• The new fermenter with 100 liters capacity was procured and installed in Fermentation Research Lab for large scale process.

3) Establishement of Nano silk Lab (funded by DBT and UGC)

• Lyophilizer
• Rotary evaporator
• Sonicator
• Ultracentrifuge

4) Establishment of Animal Cell Culture Lab having Epoxy flooring and Wall paneling (funded by RSST)

List of equipments/instruments procured were,

• Cryo-cans
• Vertical Laminar Air floor

5) Establishment of Plant Tissue Culture Lab

List of equipments/instruments procured were

• Microscope
• Green House
• Shaking Incubator for Photosynthesis
