Department of Master of Computer Applications

From the Desk of  Prof. Dr. K.A. Sumithra Devi HoD (MCA)

The Department of Master of Computer Applications was started in the year 1997. This course is a three year Post-Graduate program in Computer Applications, affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) , Belgaum, Approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi and Accredited by National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for 3 years since September 2013 for the second time. The department of MCA at RVCE has the credential achievement of being the first MCA program under VTU to be accredited by National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi during 2010 for the first time. The Milestones of the department include recognition as VTU Research Center, increase in intake of the students from 60 to 120. Major events include funded research projects, Industry Innovative labs and open source consultancy in computer Applications.

The department has 24 faculty members with various research specializations, among them 7 are doctorate holders and 11 are pursuing PhD and the rest of them are Post graduates with professional experience. The department also comprises of experienced and competent technical support staffs. The student staff ratio has been maintained as 15:1 ratio as per the AICTE norms. The department is well equipped with state of art infrastructure supported with standard software tools, computer labs having more than 150 computers with necessary peripherals and high end server connected by wi-fi network catering to student / staff / research requirements in the department.

Outline of the Course Structure:

The MCA course consists of core subjects like Operating systems, Computer Networks, Unix System Programming, Databases, Mathematics, Professional Communication and Ethics. The chart shown below represents the blending of subjects of different skill area in the curriculum. The Master of Computer Application curriculum spreads over 6 semesters which includes courses for 5 semesters aimed at transmitting the broad spectrum of knowledge as indicated below and 1 semester industrial training with internships in reputed organizations visiting the RVCE Campus.

Infrastructure / Facilities

Department has five well equipped class rooms, two tutorial rooms & one Seminar hall.

Department Library

The Department Library is well stocked with books, magazines and journals. It has more than 900 book titles for the benefit of the students. The department also has a CD Library with more than 50 CD Titles containing soft copy of the subjects in the course. It also contains hard copies of subject notes, previous year university question papers and subject wise question banks for student references along with sufficient reading space for the students.

Department Laboratories

  • There are five well-equipped networked computer labs with 168 computer systems and 21 peripherals.
  • The whole department is Wi-Fi enabled.
  • Internet Lab has been setup in the department, apart from the common browsing center facility available in the College, in order to enable the students to do quality projects.
  • A Research Project lab has also been established with high-end computer systems and peripherals with internet facility for executing research projects funded by various agencies like, Naval Research Board, Armament Research Board, DRDO, New Delhi.

EVENTS & SEMINARS 2014

1. Events Organized 2014

The department has organized both technical and non-technical events to motivate the students to show their talents. The following events were conducted during the year 2014.

a. RVCE 8TH MILE 2014

  • RVCE MCA Foss Team conducted One day workshop "Drupal" during 8th Mile fest for students from various colleges on 20th March 2014. A total of 120 students participated in the workshop. Mr Sadanand and Mr Nandan from VU Soft, Mr Chandrashekar BH, Mr Vishal C, Mr Sandeep Pateel , faculties, Department of MCA jointly organized the workshop.
  • A competition was conducted to design a web portal using Drupal. Mr Somu from Tatva and Dr. Renuka Prasad B jointly evaluated the web portal and to students from BMSIT were declared as winner and SIT college, Bangalore were the runnerup in the competition.
  • The department of MCA conducted an Technical event on "Reverse Coding" during 8th Mile fest for students from various colleges on 21st March 2014. Around 70 students participated in the event. The event was judged by Mr Dinesh and Mr Harish GM.

b.FOSS Open Source Forum

  • FOSS Open Source Forum conducted 2- day workshop on "PYTHON" for RVCE-ECE branch UG- Students and 2nd semester MCA students at Cognitive Center RVCE on 5th and 6th April 2014 in association with Industry experts.
  • A seminar on "Programming using Python workshop" was conducted by Dr Renuka Prasad B and Mr Jayasimha, Faculties, Dept of MCA for the 2nd semester students on 15th April 2014.
  • A Workshop on "Advanced routing and firewalls using Linux" was conducted by Abhas Abhinav, CEO, Deeproot Linux Pvt Ltd for the 4th semester students on 12th and 13th March 2014.
  • A Drupal Workshop was conducted by Mr B.H. Chandrashekhar and Mr. Vishal , Faculties, Dept of MCA for the 4th semester students on 12th and 13th March 2014.

c. IBM CoE activities

  • Dr.B.S .SatyaNarayana ,Principal ,RVCE , Dr. Sumithra Devi K. A , Director –MCA and 4th Sem MCA Students –Anujit Singh , Aby Ben rajan , Vishwanath J and Vinutha K participated in Round Table Discussion on "How to engage academia towards involving latest and trending Technologies " with Mr Mauricio Sucasas ,Director - Ecosystem Development - Asia Pacific on 20th May 2014 at IBM Innovation Center, IBM India Pvt Ltd, EGL,Bangalore.
  • Abhijith R, Raveesh and Sagar Naik ,Pooja , IV Sem MCA have participated in IBM Watson Mobile Idea Challenge contest by submitting their ideas on Crime Investigation APP and Campus Connect APP on 15th April 2014.
  • Twenty Students from IV Sem MCA have attended "Bluemix -Cloud Environment of IBM" Event held on 25 April 2014 ,from 10.00am to 1.00 pm at IBM EGL Office, Bangalore.
  • Siddharth, Sharth Kanthi and Vishwanath of 4th Semester MCA participated in a one day event IBM WorkLight Codeathon Event held at M.S Ramaiah Institute of Technology ,Bangalore on 28th March 2014.
  • Anujith singh, Abyben Rajan and Sujith ,3rd Sem MCA Students attended "The TGMC Session" held on 24th Jan 2014, in IBM office, Embassy Golf Links,Bangalore.

d. Entrepreneurship Development Cell

  • A talk on "The charm and Perils of becoming an Entrepreneur" was conducted on 29th March 2014 by Mr. Faizan Aziz, CEO, MetaRain Technologies, Bangalore for 4th semester MCA students

e. TEQIP-II Programmes

  • A three days TEQIP- II Initiative FDP on " Autonomic, Green and Cloud Computing" was organized by the Departments of ISE, CSE and MCA from 6th – 8th February, 2014.
  • The students of 4th semester have attended a five day workshop on ' Advanced Android Programming - learn to teach Android' under TEQIP-II , from 6th to 10th January 2014, held at MCA Seminar Hall, jointly organized by the departments of IS,CS,ECE and MCA RVCE

  • An invited talk on "Agile in Project Management and Requirements gathering" was delivered by Mr. P. Narendra Kumar, Siemens Technology and Services , Bangalore on 23rd April 2014 for the 4th semester students
  • A hands on session on "PRAM Algorithms" was conducted by Ms Priyanka Sharma , CDAC Bangalore on 15th April 2014 for the 4th semester students
  • A special lecture on "Big Data Analytics using Hadoop" was delivered by Mr Mohan Kumar, Trendwise Analytics, Bangalore on 9th April 2014 for the 2nd semester students

  • Mr. Adnan Shamir Ahmed, Mr. Srikanth B, Mr. Sujay Kumar, Ms. Babitha N from Cerner Bangalore, Alumni, Department of MCA were invited as judges for the One day symposium of 5th semester MCA Mini Project paper presentation on 29th March 2014.

1. Conference Conducted 2013

COMSAP 2013
The Department of MCA, RVCE organized the One day Conference on MCA Student Academic Projects -2013 for VI Semester MCA Students on Saturday, 13th July 2013. COMSAP -2013 an Annual event provides an unique opportunity for the students of 6th Semester MCA to showcase their projects. The students are given a unique platform to demonstrate their presentation skills and self learning capabilities which are vital for their professional growth. The Conference was inaugurated by chief guest Mr.SriHari, Team Lead, AmaDeus Software labs, Bangalore , Alumni MCA Department and the proceedings of the conference was released by all the Alumni's present during the inauguration. The key note address was given by the Chief Guest and the technical paper presentations scheduled in different venues were presented by the students. The papers were judged by industry professions, the Alumni's of MCA department.


Best papers were given to students who excelled in the presentation. Mr.Ravi Chandra C.N , 1RZ10MCA18 won the first position, Ms.Swetha R, 1RZ10MCA46 won the second position and Ms.Shetty Prathiksha , 1RZ10MCA27 won the third position.

2. Events Organized 2013

a. One day Dissemination workshop on "Wireless and Adhoc Sensor Networks"

An one day dissemination workshop titled "Wireless and Adhoc sensor networks" was organized by the departments of MCA and Mechanical Engineering ,RVCED on 26th April 2013 funded by Naval Research Board, New Delhi. the workshop was inaugurated by the chief guset, Prof.Veni Madhavan,Scientific Computing Panel Head, IISC, Bangalore , Commander Vijay Singh, Dy Direcotr, Naval Research Board, New Delhi and others. The function was presided by Prof. K.N.Raja Rao, Advoisor, RVCE, Bangalore. The key note address was delivered by the chief guest.
The workshop was conducted in two sessions. In the first session, Dr.Andhe Pallavi delivered a talk on WSN and explained about 10-15 simulators including its license types with their built in protocols with basic programming techniques of these simulators. In the afternoon session, a hands on session on NetSim simulator was presented by the developers of Tetcos, Bangalore. Finally, Dr.Andhe Dharani, the Principal Investigator of the project, described the objective of the project, design and implementation mechanism for Under water Sensor Networks.

b. Technical Fest - EXCEPTION 2013

A National Level Techno Cultural Fest "Exceptions 2013" was held during 15th - 16th March 2013. The theme of the fest was "Road Safety". A public awareness initiative on "Road Safety" was conducted on 14th March 2013 by Dr M.A.Saleem, D.C.P, Traffic Police, Bangalore. Students from 26 Colleges participated in the fest. Mr. Ali Azhar Amin , National Instruments, Alumni MCA department was the chief guest for the inauguration. Dr. Jaganathan, Incharge Principal, RVCE, Dr. Sumithra Devi, and Student Coordinator Mr. Vishnu Makkam Gupta were also present on Dias and graced the occasion. During the inaugural function, the dignitaries released the Department Magazine "DRISHYA V". Mr. Shivanandan Gupta, Alumni, MCA Department was the chief guest for the valedictory function. CMR Institute of Technology won the overall Championship Trophy and Sambram Institute of Technology, Bangalore won the Runner up Trophy in Exceptions 2013.

c. Industrial Visit

  • The students of 5th and 3rd semester MCA, 7 students from ISE department along with Dr.Sumithra Devi and Mrs.Manju Goegy attended a conference in SAP Techniversity, Bangalore 2013 on 28th September 2013
  • Mr Vishal.C, Asst. Professor, Department of MCA, attended a one day Hands-on Workshop on "ONT Oracle Application Development Framework" organized by the Oracle India Pvt Ltd, Bangalore on 27th August 2013 held at TAJ VIVANTA MG Road, Bangalore
  • Mrs. Sandhya S, Assistant Professor, attended 1 Day Workshop on "SAP HANA Startup Forum" at SAP Labs Bangalore on 29th July 2013.
  • An one day industrial visit to Cognizant Technology Solutions (CTS), at Manyatha Tech Pack, Hebbal, Bangalore was organised for 4th semester MCA along with faculty coordinators Mr. B H Chandrasekhar and Mrs. Sandhya S on 9th March 2013. The visit included a technical talk by Mr. Narendra, Associate Director, CTS, Bangalore on the topic " UNIX System Programming & Current Industry practices".
  • The girl students of 2nd Semester MCA participated in a workshop "Women Empowerment in the field of Engineering And Technology" conducted by RBEI, Bosch on 7th March 2013 on the eve of Women's day celebration at REBI. The workshop comprised of two technical talks and a panel discussion on "Opportunities and Challenges for Women in Engineering Career".

d. FOSS Open Source Forum

  • Dr.Renuka Prasad, Mr. Chandrashekar BH, Mr.Kumaraswamy, Mr. Vishal C and Mr. Sandeepa Pateel, faculties conducted TWO-DAY WORKSHOP on "Free and Open Source Software in Day to Day Computing" at the Department of Master of Computer Applications in Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology from 25th October 2013 to 26th October 2013.
  • Mr.Harish GM and Mr. Sandeepa Pateel, Asst Professors, Conducted session on Free and Open Source Tools, for carrying mini project work using these tools on 31st October 2013 at 9:00 Am to 11:30 AM in MCA Seminar hall for 3 rd Sem MCA Students.

e. IBM CoE activities

  • The Dept of MCA, under IBM CoE, RVCE has organised a 3 day workshop on DB2 Certification Training Program from 25- 27th October 2013 in MCA Seminar hall and MCA labs. Around 90 RVCE students attended this workshop.
  • RVCE , Nodal Centre for IBM TGMC 12 Face to Face Evaluation Round
    • R.V.College of Engineering was chosen as Nodal Centre for The Great Mind Challenge (TGMC) 12 Face to Face Evaluation Round in Karnataka. Around 48 Teams from different states (Orissa , Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu , Andhra Pradesh )Pondicherry have participated in the contest. The Contest was conducted for 4 days from 26th - 29th August 2013 in Bio Tech Seminar Hall ,RVCE,Bangalore
    • 8 Teams have submitted The Great Mind Challenge (TGMC) projects to IBM and two teams from MCA Dept were qualified in the first round of IBM TGMC 12 contest.
  • The Department of MCA under IBM CoE conducted IBM Lotus Notes Domino 8 System Administration Operating Fundamentals Certification exam for RVCE Students on 26th March 2013. 92 students from various departments appeared for certification exam and 77 students successfully received the certification.

f. Entrepreneurship Development Cell

  • A seminar on "Unix and its Varients " was conducted on 21st Nov 2013 for the students of I semester by Mr. Varuna E, Eudaemonic Systems, Mysore
  • An Invited talk on "Entrepreneur Development Skills" was delivered by Mr.Hemant Chandani CEO, Outfit technologies and Alumni MCA, RVCE, Bangalore, on 31st August for V semester students.
  • Mr. Subramanya , Senior software engineer, Accenture, Bangalore and Alumni MCA delivered talk on "Entrepreneurship skills" for 4th semester MCA students on 27th April 2013.

  • A Motivational talk on "Self learning and Development "was organised on 23rd Nov 2013 for the I semester students by Mr.Sivananju BN Research scholar, IISc Bangalore.
  • An expert lecture on " Graph theory and applications" was conducted on 28th Nov 2013 by Dr.Annamma Abraham, HOD, Dept of Mathematics, BMSIT, for the 1st semester MCA students .
  • A technical talk on "BIG DATA" was delivered by Mr. Mohan Kumar, Co-Founder and CEO of Trendwise Analytics,Bangalore, for 3rd semester students on 19th, Tuesday, November 2013.
  • A seminar on "Introduction to S.A.P." was delivered by Mr. Anand Aithal, SAP Lead Consultant , LSI India R & D Pvt Ltd, for 3rd Semester M.C.A. students on 12th November 2013 .
  • An expert lecture on the topic "OOMD & UML" was delivered by Mr. Narendra Kumar P, Chief Manager at Siemens technology and Serivces Ltd., Bangalore at the MCA Seminar Hall, to the 5th Semester MCA students on October 31st 2013 .
  • Four day workshop on Soft Skills was conducted for 3rd sem A and B section from 30 th Sept to 3rd Oct 2013 in MCA Seminar hall by M/s Zen School for Skills Bangalore.
  • Mrs.Ashwini B.M and Mr. Jayasimha S.R jointly conducted a technical session on "Database connectivity using C#" as part of Part B Project in Dot Net Lab, to the students of 5th semester MCA on 23rd October 2013 .
  • A Two day workshop " Learn English Easily" was conducted for 3rd Sem Students on 12th and 13th August 2013 by Mr.Anand Rao ,Director, M/S Zen School for Skills,Bangalore.

  • A workshop on "Sustainable solutions for E-Waste Management" 2nd edition of " A Process towards Zero Waste and Energy Independent Campus" organized jointly by the Department of MCA and ISE on 20th and 28th September 2013.
  • A 5 day Faculty Development Program on 'Applications of Operations Research in Transport and Logistics Sector' jointly organized Jointly Organized by Departments of IEM , MCA and Mathematics, RVCE, Bangalore
  • A 5 Day Faculty Development Workshop On 'Quality Engineering And Testing For Software Intensive Systems' Jointly Organized by Department ISE/CMCA/CSE Under TEQUIP II Initiative from 26th - 30th August 2013.
  • A 5 day TEQIP- II Initiative FDP workshop on "Cyber Security and Forensics – Building awareness and competence in cyber crime law and technology" organized by the departments of CSE,ISE,TE,ECE,EEE and IT from 29th July – 2nd August 2013.
  • A 3 day TEQIP- II Initiative FDP on " Stochastic Processes in Engineering and Technology" organized by the Department of Mathematics, IEM and MCA from 18th – 20th July, 2013.

4. Alumni Activities 2013

  • Mr Utkarsh BT, Mr.Naveen A, Ms. Vidhya Rao, Ms. Babitha Naidu Alumni's , Department of MCA were invited as evaluators for reviewing the V semester Academic Mini Projects on 26th October 2013.

  • A One day open seminar for PhD Scholars was conducted on 22nd February 2014 by Mr Saroj K Mehr, ISI, Bangalore, providing an opportunity for the doctoral students to present their research progress for a quality feedback from the expert.

  • R V College of Engineering has signed a MoU with Trend wise Software solutions, Department of MCA as associating department for students' project, internships and research activities during the year 2014-15.
  • The department has renewed RVCE - IBM Center of Excellence Laboratory for the year 2013-14
  • MoU between the department and Cognizant Technology Solutions for Free and Open Source Software has been upgraded with a sponsorship of Rs. 3,62,500 lakhs for the year 2013-14
  • Under Campus Connect Program by Infosys Technologies, Bangalore the department of MCA conducted Foundation Program (FP-I) for Non-IT students for 3 months during the period March – May 2013.

IBM Center of Excellence at RVCE

R V College of Engineering entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IBM academic Initiative, on 30th March, 2010 and is renewed for the year 2013. Under this MoU a Center of Excellence has been setup in the MCA department. The center will conduct certification courses and training programs on IBM technologies to the faculties and students of RVCE. The other highlights are – Free IBM software facilities, Free IBM certification programs, Free IBM Red Book Library with software tools, CDs.

RVCE - CTS Open Source Laboratory

On 11th April 2011 RVCE-CTS Open Source Laboratory was inaugurated in the department of MCA by the Vice-President of CTS Mr. Kalyan Mohan, in presence of Principal, RVCE, Director MCA, RVCE and HODs of other departments. The Lab is an advanced state of art industry – university setup aimed at fostering, training and Research & Development using Open Source Software. The MoU has been renewed for the year 2013 with a support of Rs. 3, 62,500 lakhs for the year 2013-14 at the MCA Department

Annual Function 2014

The annual function of MCA IT Forum was organized on 26th April 2014 with Mr.Suhas, Developer in ThoughtWorks, Bangalore and Alumni Department of MCA as the chief guest. The function started with invocation, briefing on Forum activities, releasing of the department magazine "Drishya-VI" followed by felicitating the students who have excelled in Semester Exams, Extra Mural projects, Sports, Inter-Collegiate fests, Talent Hunt program. Mr Prathviraj of 6th semester was awarded the Best Outgoing Student of the year 2014. Mr.Suhas shared his experience in the department and encouraged the students to participate in forum activities which adds feather to their cap for entering the corporate world.

  • The Students of 3rd semester participated in Resolution-13 organised by CMRIT, Banglore on 27th Sep 2013. Sanjeev Kumar Suman won First prize in coding.
  • Nandish Asangi , Mohammed Safiulla Junaid and Anujith Singh , students of 3rd semester participated in the "Hack-Tricks 2014" organized by Acharya Institute of Management and Science, Peenya, Bangalore, on20th and 21st September 2013.

Sports Activities

  • Anup Basti of 5th semester MCA represented RVCE at secured 2nd place in the Prof Mukherjee memorial table Tennis tournament held from 9th -11th Nov 2013
  • Parvinder singh of 3rd semester MCA has secured 3rd place in the VTU Intercollegiate Judo competition(90 kgs) 2013-14 .
  • Himansh Singh of 1st semester MCA has secured 1st place and Nitesh CB of 3rd semester has secured the second place in the VTU Intercollegiate Judo competition (100+kgs) 2013-14.
  • Bharth B of 3rd semester MCA participated in the 16th Dr. M.S Ramaiah Memorial Inter Engineering College Cricket tournament held from 28th aug to 7th sep 2013 and secured runner up.
  • Bharth B of 3rd semester MCA represented RVCE at secured runners up in cricket Inter collegiate Inter Zone competition held at SIR MVIT Bangalore from 5th April 2013 to 10th April 2013.

Accenture Campus innovation program

The students of I semester MCA participated in the "Accenture Campus innovation program - Crack the Contest" for RVCE Students Hosted by MCA, ISE, CSE Departments on 16th November, and Mr. Sudesh I sem B - MCA was selected as one of the winners.

THE OBJECTIVES
The Centre is established in 2006 with the following objectives:

  • To provide training for the poor and underprivileged women.
  • To provide social justice and empowerment through enhancement of technical skills in the women of the weaker section of our society
  • To impart the theoretical and practical aspects of basic knowledge of computers to enable these students feel more confident in their work areas.
  • To empower the women to be self employed.
  • To motivate them to be self-confident in their life.


TRAINING PROGRAMME OFFERED BY THE CENTRE
The various areas in which trainings are given include computer fundamentals, MS-Office, Tally, Adobe Photo shop, Fundamental Programming languages, PC/Network maintenance and Troubleshooting Program , Internet fundamentals , communication skills and hardware skills.

X BATCH (KSWDC) June – Aug 2013
The department has successfully conducted three months certificate training programme for 20 women on the topics including Basic IT skills, hardware and software trainings, and personality development skills conducted during June 2013-August 2013 .

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Placements

The students of MCA course have got job opportunities in software companies like Cognizant Technologies, Informatica, IBM, Wipro, Mindtree, Tesco, Amazon, Deeshaw, Deloitte, Practo, Cerner , Robert Bosch , TCS, Yahoo, Google and many more companies . The highest salary is about 12lakhs and average around 3.87 lakhs. The placement records of the MCA students have been exemplary. The department has very good placements in the current year 2012 that included 100% internships and 41 placements in reputed IT companies.

Pre placement Activities

The department of MCA conducts a series of training for the students to prepare themselves for placements. The various trainings include

  • • English sessions are conducted during1 & 2semister and evaluated at the end of the semester.
    • Aptitude and soft skills trainings are given to the students in the 3rd and 4th semester and evaluated at the end of respective semester.
    • Lab skill sessions are conducted for 1st and 2nd year students and evaluated at the end of every semester with online tests.
    • Extra mural projects are given for 2nd ,3rd and 4th sem students and evaluated at the end of every semester.
