About the Course

Department of Master of Computer Applications The Department of Master of Computer Applications was started in the year 1997. This course is a three year Post-Graduate program in Computer Applications with 120 students intake. The MCA program is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belgaum, Approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. The MCA Program at R V College of Engineering is the first one in Karnataka to get accredited for 3 years by National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi. Being exposed to quantitative and qualitative analysis skills which are built into the curriculum and training provided by the department, the students are equipped to be innovative and creative. The graduates of this discipline will also have adequate mathematical, technical, software, management and research skills.

Academic Program:

The MCA course consists of core subjects like Operating systems, Ethics, Databases, Mathematics, system software etc. The chart shown below represents the blending of subjects of different skill area in the curriculum. The Master of Computer Application curriculum spreads over 6 semesters which includes courses for 5 semesters aimed at transmitting the broad spectrum of knowledge as indicated below and 1 semester industrial training with internships in reputed organizations visiting the RVCE Campus.

MCA Course Structure (2010 onwards)

The department has on its rolls highly qualified teaching and technical staffs, exposed to the latest developments in their fields, to impart technical and practical skills to the students. The Faculties and students have enrolled in various professional bodies like IEEE, CSI, ISTE, IETE, IACSIT, IAENG etc. The ratio of faculty to student is 1:12.

Infrastructure

The Department Library is well stocked with books, magazines and journals. It has more than 900 book titles for the benefit of the students. The department also has a CD Library with more than 50 CD Titles and also contains soft and hard copies of subject notes, previous year university question papers, subject wise question banks for student references along with sufficient reading space for the students.

 



The department is spread over a area of 2036.05 Sq. M.

  • The whole department is Wi-Fi enabled.
  • There are four well-equipped networked computer labs with 144 high end Computer Systems and 37 peripherals.

  • Internet Lab has been setup in the department, apart from the common browsing center facility available in the College, in order to enable the students to do quality projects.
  • A Research Project lab has also been established with high-end computer systems and peripherals with internet facility for executing research projects funded by various agencies like, Naval Research Board, Armament Research Board, etc.
  • There are 5 well equipped Classrooms and 2 Tutorial rooms.

Research Project Lab:

10 high end machines with Graphics Card facility and MEMS Simulation software Intellisuite 8.5 Version, Vector Analyzer, MEMS Switches, is available in the project lab, dedicated for carrying out funded research projects in the department. Currently, there are two funded projects worth 5.1 Lakhs, appointing 4 research assistants working on it.

RVCE - CTS Open Source Laboratory

On 11th April 2011 RVCE-CTS Open Source Laboratory was inaugurated in the department of MCA by the Vice-President of CTS Mr. Kalyan Mohan, in presence of Principal,RVCE, Director MCA, RVCE and HODs of other departments. The Lab is an advanced state of art industry – university setup aimed at fostering training and Research & Development using Open Source Software.

IBM Center of Excellence at RVCE

R V College of Engineering entered into a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with IBM Academic Initiative, on 30th March, 2010. Under this MoU a Center of Excellence has been setup in the MCA department. The IBM Center of Excellence was inaugurated by Mr. Jim Corgel, General Manager, ISV and Developer Relations, IBM Software Group. The center will conduct certification courses and training programs on IBM technologies to the faculties and students of RVCE. The other highlights are – Free IBM software facilities, Free IBM certification programs, Free IBM Red Book Library.

Placements

The students of MCA course have got job opportunities in software companies like Oracle, Intel, Google, Accenture, TCS, IBM, Wipro, Infosys, Honeywell, Mindtree, Tesco, Amazon, etc.. The highest salary is about 8 lakhs and average around 3.87 lakhs.
MCA students are also exposed to excellent technical environment, with courses being conducted by companies like Infosys, Oracle, IBM, TCS, Accenture etc, and training by experts Zen School, Next Edge, TIME, i-Point on personality, aptitude & communication skills.

The placement records of the MCA students have been exemplary. We have recorded very good placements in the current year 2011 that included 100% internships and 41 placements in reputed IT companies.

1. CONFERENCES CONDUCTED

Relevance Of Sustainable Technology For Growing Of Women - A one day conference was conducted on 21st March 2011. The conference was presided by the Dr.B.S.Satyanarayana, Principal RVCE , Mr. Raja Rao, Advisor, RVCE and chaired by various prominent Women Representatives from IT Companies and Academia. The following dignitaries were invited as part of the Conference: Ms Priya Madhavan, Chief architect CTS, Bangalore, Ms Anupama Nithyanand, Infosys, Bangalore, Ms Arundhathi, Hewlett Packard , Bangalore, Dr.Annamma Abraham, HOD, Department of Mathematics ,BMSIT, Bangalore, Dr.G.Padmavathi, HOD, Department of Computer science, Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore. Papers presentation sessions were held in which the issues related to sustainable technology for the growth of women were discussed by the various speakers from different organizations.

b CoMSAP 2011 - A One Day Conference on MCA Final Semester Students Academic Projects was conducted on June 25th 2011. The annual conference hosted by the department aims to bring out technical paper publications from the 6th semester MCA students who are involved in real time projects with various companies. This conference provides a platform to showcase their presentation skills and was judged by the alumni of the department.
c 25th CSI Karnataka Students Convention - Jjointly organized by department of MCA, CSE and ISE, in which around 200 student delegates from different colleges across India participated. The major events organized as part of the convention were Technical Paper Presentation Sessions and IT Quiz. The MCA Department Students won Prizes in both the categories:

d EXCEPTIONS 2011 – Inter Collegiate Technical Fest was conducted by the department during on 25th– 26th March 2011 with the theme "Nurture Nature for Our Future". Based on the theme, department hosted the program as a part of NSS RVCE planting trees on 20th March 2011. This programme was inagurated by our principal, Dr.B.S.Satynaryana. Planting of trees was done in and around RVCE campus and also at different locations of Bangalore which include Kengeri, Mylasandra, Rajarajeswari Nagar, Nagarbhavi ensuring the Nurturing of plants, promising to continue this theme in future also by the students and staff of Deparetment of MCA. Totally 22 colleges registered for the different events few were from outside Bangalore . There were 200 participants from different colleges and 10 from RVCE. There were 20 events held during the two day fest. Department Alumni supported the fest by judging the different events and also sponsoring the fest. The different sponsors were Methods Auotmotive Pvt Ltd, Shroff publishers, Bank of Maharastra, Gurudev infotech, Georgia, NIIT, Vasthra, Pawan Jewllers ,Alumni's MCA department, Staff and students of the department. The overall trophy was bagged by NIITE College, NITTE and runners up were St. Aloysious College, Mangalore

6. IBM CoE Activities

a DB2 Certification Workshop
 

3 Day DB2 Certification Workshop for around 100 student participants from MCA department M.Tech ISE, M.Tech ISE departments was conducted by the IBM CoE at the R.V. Center for Cognitive Studies from 3rd to 5th February 2011. The speaker of the workshop Mr. Mohammad Adnan Khan from IBM India conducted hands on sessions on installation of DB2 and associated packages like VM Ware and explained the various features of the DB2 software.

Visit By Dignitaries from IBM

 

The IBM - Center of Excellence at the department of MCA was visited by dignitaries on 26th April 2011 from IDC and IBM who were received at the Principal’s office by key executives from RVCE including Vice-Principal, Mr. Satyanarayana S, Director Administation, Dr. Subramanya KA, Director Placement Dr. Narahari N S, Director MCA Deaprtment Dr. Sumithra Devi KA.
The MCA department students presented their IBM-TGMC Projects to the dignitaries which was well received and appreciated.

Mr. Sachin  from IBM Bangalore addressed the 3rd Semester MCA students on 21st September 201 giving the details related to “TGMC PROJECTS” and motivating the students to take up TGMC-2011 projects.

The department was considered as a nodal center for the Face to Face session of the selected TGMC -2010 projects. The Face to Face session was on 5th and 6th July 2011 where around 20 teams all around Bangalore participated. The panel consisted of officials from IBM to see the demonstration of  projects.

Around 100 students register for TGMC 2011. Students opted for various project scenarious related to real world. Some of the project titles are "Indian Wildlife", "Social Networking" , "Automation of Civil Court", "Indian Electrol System" etc. All these projects are guided by eminent faculties in the department.

Online Programming Contest Participations

INFOSYS ASPIRATIONS 20-20 : National Level Coding Contest : 28 teams from the Department of MCA partiipated in the college level round of the National Level Online Programming Contest. The event was conducted at the MCA department LAB3 facility on 12th September 2011 from 11:30 am – 4: 30 pm, (5 hours contest).

8. ENTREPRENEUR DEVELOPMENT CELL (EDC) ACTIVITIES

 

A separate Cell for Entrepreneurship Development in the department is actively involved in   disseminating new knowledge and insights in well-directed areas such as Free and Open Source Software.

   

9. ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

 

The alumni are a vibrant force in the department. They are actively involved in student placements, internships, delivering lectures, conducting seminars and workshops. Some of the alumni have enrolled for higher studies and are well placed in the companies. An alumni meet is conducted every year.

 

ALUMNI MEET 2011 was conducted on October 2nd 2011 at the MCA Department in which more than 25 Alumni were present. The event was presided by Dr. Sumithra Devi KA, Director MCA Department and other dignitaries from RVCE.

THE OBJECTIVES

The Centre is established with the following objectives:

  • To provide training for the poor and underprivileged women.
  • To provide social justice and empowerment through enhancement of technical skills in the women of the weaker section of our society
  • To impart the theoretical and practical aspects of basic knowledge of computers to enable these students feel more confident in their work areas.
  • To empower the women to be self employed.
  • To motivate them to be self-confident in their life.

TRAINING PROGRAMME OFFERED BY THE CENTRE:

The training programmes offered by the Centre are specially designed and job-oriented. The number of training programmes is getting added frequently to suit the need of the hour. The following ar the training programmes presently offered by the Centre exclusively for the benefit of the underprivileged women.

Computer Fundamentals- Introduction to the PC, How the PC Works , Overview of Systems and Components, PC Keyboard Controller Functions, Systems and Components, Motherboard and System Devices , System Bus, Functions and Features, Practical how to know the system configuration , Input/output process and hands on experience

MS-Office Suite- MS-Word, MS-Excel, MS-PowerPoint, MS-Access, Practical to create documents, spreadsheets, Presentations and database. Supporting lab sessions

TALLY- Basic Accounting Concepts, Preparing a Balance Sheet, Voucher Entries, Ledger Location.

Adobe Photoshop - Using the tool for making own designs and also explaining all the features of the software.

PC/Network maintenance and Troubleshooting Program – Introduction to Computer Hardware, PC OS Software, Networking Technologies Methods to Upgrade, Troubleshoot and ,repair any hardware problem, format disk Drives, Installation and upgrade Operating Systems, Setup and maintain a network, Including, layout cabling, devices and protocols with Hands on Experience

Programming Language - Introduction to C, Data types in ,Variable Declaration , Input/Output Functions, Formatting Input/Output functions, Operators, Hierarchy of operators, Condition Statements Loop Statements, Art of programming, Arrays with Supporting Lab Sessions.
