About the Programme:

M.Tech in Product Design and Manufacturing (PDM) was started in the year 2004 in the department of Mechanical Engineering. The program is approved by AICTE, Government of Karnataka and is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Karnataka. The program is aimed at a set of activities needed to bring new product and technologies to the marketplace. It encompasses activities spanning the entire product life-cycle, starting from identification of need, through design, manufacture and end of useful life.

The program aims to impart creative ideas for product design. It focuses on the ability to apply quantitative skills and models for robust design of products and processes. It covers structural, ergonomic and aesthetic design of products by creative, analytical, experimental and numerical approaches.

The program mainly focuses on Product Design and Development, Product Life Cycle Management, Product Data Management, Robust Design, Simulation and Modeling of Systems, Optimization Techniques, Product Planning and Marketing, Design for Manufacture, Finite Element Modeling, etc. Students have opportunity to work in the areas of Product Life Cycle Management, Product Design and Development in association with the on-going research projects of the faculty members sponsored by agencies such as DRDO laboratories, ISRO, AICTE, DST and other agencies.

Eligibility: Candidates who have acquired BE/B.Tech or equivalent degree in Mechanical Engineering/ Industrial Engineering and Management/ Industrial Production Engineering/ Automobile Engineering/ Manufacturing Engineering by securing not less than 50% marks in aggregate. However in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/Group 1 aggregate percent of marks in qualifying examination should not be less than 45%. The admissions are through central counseling on the basis of merit in PGCET or GATE. A few seats are also available under sponsored and Management quota. GATE qualified candidates are eligible for scholarship through AICTE.

Infrastructure: The program is associated with hands on training in:
Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) Laboratory (Windchill 9.1), Computer Aided Design (CAD) Laboratory (Pro-E, Unigraphics, Solid Edge), Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Laboratory , Advanced Nanotechnology Laboratory, Advanced FRP Laboratory

Major Project Areas: Students are encouraged to participate in sponsored projects in the areas of:
New Product Development , Robust Design of Products and Processes, Customization / implementation of PLM in PLM platforms (Windchill / Ennovia), Design for Manufacture Analysis of Systems / Processes using Simulation .

Placement Opportunities: Students have placement and internship opportunities in GE Healthcare, Ingersoll-Rand, Kennametal Widma Machine Tools, Hycom Engineering, Ace Designers, Robert Bosch, Toyota, etc.
