The department of Physical Education & sports was established in 1963. The department has undergone NBA accreditation in the year 2006. It is also affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.

To provide adequate Physical Education facilities and Programme that are wholesome and attractive so as to enshrine sound mind in a sound body.

- To provide adequate infrastructure facilities for sports and games so that students choose and participate in the events for which they have flair. To spot and groom the sports talent. To foster, better human relations through sports and games.

History
Ever since the establishment, the department has produced many national and international level players. PADMASHREE. ANIL KUMBLE, Indian team cricket player has excelled both in sports and academics. In spite of playing for the country, he has secured distinction in Mechanical Engineering. ARJUNA AWARDEE. CHETAN BABOOR, the International Table Tennis player has also brought laurels to the college. He also represented India in Barcelona Olympics 1992, when he was in first year BE. Mr. Srinivas, Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh have represented India in Basket Ball, in the year 1988-89 & 1989-90 respectively.
The management of the Institution is constantly lending their support and giving incentives to the achievers of sports in different arena of sports. The active support of the management, staff and the Department of sports has been responsible for instituting a good sports culture in the college. The college has seen very good achievers in the team games of Cricket, Table Tennis, Foot Ball, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Tennis, Hockey, Chess, Shuttle Badminton, Hand Ball, Kho-Kho and Throw Ball. In addition to team games individuals have excelled in college and University level sports events in Athletics & Swimming.
Every year, college organizes many Invitational & university matches in its college campus. Sri Chamaraju Memorial Inter Collegiate Cricket Tournament; highly prestigious and most awaited cricket tournament for all the V.T.U affiliated colleges. TERMINAL VELOCITY- Inter Collegiate Shuttle Badminton (M & W ) Tournament, MOMENTUM-Inter Collegiate Foot Ball Tournament, ELEVATION – Inter Collegiate Basket Ball ( M & W ) Tournament, SPIKERS-Inter Collegiate Volley Ball (Women) Tournament is also organized every year.
Many students of RVCE have represented the state & V.T.U in sports like Shuttle Badminton, Cricket, Basket Ball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Swimming, , Hand Ball, Chess, Ball Badminton, Volley Ball, Kho-Kho, Hockey, Cross Country and Athletics.
Physical Education & Sports
Physical education-is an integral part of educational programme designed to promote the optimum development of an individual physically, emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually through total body movement in the performance of properly selected physical activities. The primary aims of physical education have varied, based on the needs of the time and place. Most of the institutions’ goal is to provide students with knowledge, skills, capacities, values, and the enthusiasm to maintain a healthy lifestyle into adulthood. Activities included in the programme are designed to promote physical fitness, to develop motor skills, to instill knowledge and understanding of rules, concepts, and strategies. Students learn to either work as part of a team, or as individuals, in a wide variety of competitive activities.
Sport has existed for several thousand years. As the world population continues to increase and technology improves in areas such as transportation, communication, medicine, and sports equipment, sport will continue to evolve and involve more and more people across nearly all parts of the world. Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports is commonly referred to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determinant of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games. Sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play.
Department of Physical Education & Sports conducted a seminar on “Life skills through sports” by Mr. Sujith Somasunder (Ex-International Cricketer & Karnataka Ranji Team player on 17th May 2008, followed by a cricket match [Wipro Cup] on the same day between R.V.C.E & B.M.S.C.E.
