About the Department

The department of Physical Education & sports was established in 1963. The department has undergone NBA accreditation in the year 2006. It is also affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.

Sports GroundTo provide adequate Physical Education facilities and Programme that are wholesome and attractive so as to enshrine sound mind in a sound body.

  • To provide adequate infrastructure facilities for sports and games so that students choose and participate in the events for which they have flair. To spot and groom the sports talent. To foster, better human relations through sports and games.
  • To imbibe in the students discipline, leadership qualities, courage and the sense of belonging through sports activities. To train the students to receive success and defeat equanimously.

History

Ever since the establishment, the department has produced many national and international level players. PADMASHREE. ANIL KUMBLE, Indian team cricket player has excelled both in sports and academics.  In spite of playing for the country, he has secured distinction in Mechanical Engineering. ARJUNA AWARDEE. CHETAN BABOOR, the International Table Tennis player has also brought laurels to the college. He also represented India in Barcelona Olympics 1992, when he was in first year BE. Mr. Srinivas, Mr. Sanjay Kumar Singh have represented India in Basket Ball, in the year 1988-89 & 1989-90 respectively.
        
The management of the Institution is constantly lending their support and giving incentives to the achievers of sports in different arena of sports.  The active support of the management, staff and the Department of sports has been responsible for instituting a good sports culture in the college. The college has seen very good achievers in the team games of Cricket, Table Tennis, Foot Ball, Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Tennis, Hockey, Chess, Shuttle Badminton, Hand Ball, Kho-Kho and Throw Ball. In addition to team games individuals have excelled in college and University level sports events in Athletics & Swimming.

Every year, college organizes many Invitational & university matches in its college campus. Sri Chamaraju Memorial Inter Collegiate Cricket Tournament; highly prestigious and most awaited cricket tournament for all the V.T.U affiliated colleges. TERMINAL VELOCITY- Inter Collegiate Shuttle Badminton (M & W ) Tournament, MOMENTUM-Inter Collegiate Foot Ball Tournament, ELEVATION – Inter Collegiate Basket Ball ( M & W ) Tournament, SPIKERS-Inter Collegiate Volley Ball (Women) Tournament is also organized every year.
           
Many students of RVCE have represented the state & V.T.U in sports like Shuttle Badminton, Cricket, Basket Ball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Swimming, , Hand Ball, Chess, Ball Badminton, Volley Ball, Kho-Kho, Hockey, Cross Country and Athletics.

Physical Education & Sports

Physical education-is an integral part of educational programme designed to promote the optimum development of an individual physically, emotionally, mentally, socially and spiritually through total body movement in the performance of properly selected physical activities. The primary aims of physical education have varied, based on the needs of the time and place. Most of the institutions’ goal is to provide students with knowledge, skills, capacities, values, and the enthusiasm to maintain a healthy lifestyle into adulthood. Activities included in the programme are designed to promote physical fitness, to develop motor skills, to instill knowledge and understanding of rules, concepts, and strategies. Students learn to either work as part of a team, or as individuals, in a wide variety of competitive activities.

Sport has existed for several thousand years. As the world population continues to increase and technology improves in areas such as transportation, communication, medicine, and sports equipment, sport will continue to evolve and involve more and more people across nearly all parts of the world. Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Sports is commonly referred to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor are the sole or primary determinant of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports (a common name for some card games and board games. Sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play.

Department of Physical Education & Sports conducted a seminar on “Life skills through sports” by Mr. Sujith Somasunder (Ex-International Cricketer & Karnataka Ranji Team player on 17th May 2008, followed by a cricket match [Wipro Cup] on the same day between R.V.C.E & B.M.S.C.E.

Shuttle Badminton Court : Housed in Old Sports Complex, is the busiest centre of the complex. Both the Staff members & the student flex their muscles here. The wooden court has an area of 300 Sqmts & is very well utilized by the students.

Foot Ball: A new field area of 6300 Sq.m. for Foot Ball, Hockey, Athletics & other events are located adjoining the Architecture Block.

Indoor Basket Ball Stadium (New Sports Complex) : Constructed in1995-96. The college can boost of very spacious Indoor Basket Ball Stadium at the prime place in the campus, near the Hostels. We are proud that many Varsity, Inter Collegiate tournaments are conducted here. The stadium is having movable posts. The court has a dimension of 450 Sqmts & can accommodate 350 people.

Table Tennis: It has also been a popular game in the campus. It has an area of 144 Sq mts in ground & is located on the First Floor of the Old Sports Complex.

Chess & Carrom : Indoor games like Chess & Carrom are accommodated in an area of 25 Sq mts. Students have won many prizes in various tournaments conducted at University level.

Multi Gym : Started in 1980-81. It is the main attraction for the students& is located in the New Sports Complex. It has all modern 12 station equipments. Students can make use of this facility even during their leisure and keep themselves FIT and HEALTHY.

Value added services

  • Coaches appointed :
    a) Mr. G.S.Jadahav, Basket Ball coach from Sports Authority of India, Bangalore, was appointed as the college Basket Ball (M & W ) teams. Both the teams have won many prestigious Invitational tournaments & V.T.U tournament under his coaching.
    b) Mr. Suresh.D.Shanbal, ex-ranji player, was appointed as the college cricket team. The team has won Ghousia Inter Collegiate Cricket Tournament under his coaching.
  • Special Recognition during campus recruitment: Students those who represent the College and VTU Teams in different sports & games will get special recognition during the campus recruitment. Many of our sports students are now working in top most IT Sectors
  • Scholarship :
    a) Students those who represents the VTU team they will get Rs 2,000 cash award and blazer from the university.

    b) From the college Rs 500/- is given for University representation, Rs 750/- for State representation & Rs 1000 for National and International level.
  • Sports wear: All the students representing the college in various sports & games are given the suitable sports wear.
  • Medical facilities: If any student is injured while representing the college, college will bear the medical expense.
  • Attendance: The players representing the college team in Invitational & V.T.U Inter Collegiate games will be given attendance for the days missed for the tournament.
  • Extra Internal: There will be a 4th internal given to the students; in case they miss the regular internals due to V.T.U inter collegiate tournaments or any prestigious invitational tournament.
  • Credits: Extra 2 credits to the students in the autonomous scheme, representing college in sports and this would be entered in the 8th semester marks sheet, is being proposed.
